The European Parliament wants Erasmus grants to reflect the rent in each city

MEPs are asking for €47.39 billion for Erasmus+ from 2028 to 2034, against the €40.8 billion the Commission proposed. It is still a negotiating position, not law.

The European Parliament has adopted its position for negotiating the next Erasmus+, covering 2028 to 2034, with 454 votes in favour, 34 against and 93 abstentions. The rapporteur is Polish MEP Bogdan Zdrojewski (EPP).

What it asks for

  • €47.39 billion in current prices over seven years. The Commission had proposed €40.8 billion in July 2025.
  • Grants adjusted to place: mobility grants would take into account the cost of living, housing and inflation in the destination country, region or city, and would be reviewed regularly.
  • Recognition of the extra cost of travelling to remote destinations.
  • Opening the programme to more people, such as vocational learners, trainers and grassroots athletes.
  • Letting the United Kingdom, Switzerland and candidate countries take part faster, without going through the association procedure.

For the current programme, the Commission already plans for the UK and Switzerland to be associated to Erasmus+ from 2027, according to its mobility trends report published this year.

What happens next

This is Parliament’s position, not a law. It has to be negotiated with the member states, which still need to agree their own position, including the overall EU budget for those years. There is no timetable.

If you are leaving in the next few years, none of this applies to you yet: your grant follows the current rules. You can see what each national agency pays in our comparison by home country.

Why it matters

Today the grant depends on the country, not the city: you get the same in an expensive city as in a cheap one in the same country. If this idea survives the negotiation, it would change what students leaving from 2028 receive.
